Shoelaces, cards, journals, Milo, music that makes me cry... what do all these things have in common?
They fill me up with kindness, every day. But what led me to this conclusion? I guess you could say it started with a pair of shoelaces.
On holidays with my family in Northern NSW, I was doing nothing particularly interesting when a total stranger complimented me on my shoelaces. Of course, I cracked up laughing, but I couldn’t quite shake the incredible feeling of warmth that had welled up inside of me. How amazing would our communities be if we took the time to fill each other up and brighten someone’s day – even if it means complimenting strangers on their shoelaces!?
While this unusual remark changed the course of my day, we don’t have to leave kindness to chance.
If there’s one thing I’ve come to believe it’s that we ‘fill up’ with the things that we surround ourselves with. When I fill my days with good friends and uplifting music, I am much more likely to be willing to serve others in my community. When I give myself time to reflect on my prayers and emotions, I am much more likely to share my peace and joy with the world. The best part about filling ourselves with kindness is, eventually, we begin to overflow.
For me, overflowing with kindness looks like writing loving notes to my friends, and my not-quite friends. Overflowing with kindness sounds like the perfect mixture of laughter and tears as I stand beside my peers through the good times, and the hard. Overflowing with kindness smells like Milo – sweet, comforting and energising!
While I’m sure the stranger never intended for their small remark to end up here, for me, this is just more proof that overflowing with kindness never goes to waste. It doesn’t matter how small, it can only achieve great things.
I am confident we were created to spread the spirit of kindness and joy throughout our communities and indeed the world. So, go! Fill yourself with kindness. Compliment someone on their shoelaces (or whatever!). I dare you!
