I absolutely love history and have been fascinated by it through all my school life.
But why focus on the past (especially when you are often told not to dwell in the past)? Confused much? Great! That means you’re intrigued. So here are a couple of explanations to try and un-confuse you (is that even a word?!)
What if every morning you awoke to find that you and everyone else in the world had no idea what happened yesterday?
Hear me out now.
Here are THE PROS of that situation -
If you got in trouble the day before, no one can remember, not even you! Your past mistakes are forgotten so you can't dwell on them.
The world might not be so violent, no one can remember why they are fighting.
And THE CONS?
You can't retain information - you forget everything you learn - (no school - maybe a pro?).
You can't learn from your mistakes because you don't remember them.
The list could go on...
The point is that even though you wish the world would restart each day and someone would forget the stupid thing you did yesterday, there are as many pros as there are cons.
So looking at the past gives you depth of understanding of the present and possibly the future too. History also helps us to not make the same mistakes from the past that a huge political figure or a famous poet made. HELPFUL!
Even though history is amazing and the best subject, we shouldn't ever dwell on the past, nor should we dwell on the future. Maybe we should learn from the past, look forward to the future and live in the present!
I have personally struggled to forgive myself for past mistakes. But I know the sooner I can learn from the past without dwelling on it, the sooner I can rise above it and soar.
