23-year-old Emily McCubben is an enthusiastic artist who wants to inspire creativity in us all!
Where are you from?
I was born in Armidale NSW and grew up in Inverell. But I have moved a lot, in fact I have moved houses 29 times so far!
What kind of art do you create?
I enjoy all types of painting. Just recently, I have really been motivated by watercolour and black ink.
I have plans to write a story book one day - hopefully before my little one learns to read!
When did you start out?
My mum, who is an artist herself, taught me from a young age. Art has always been an interest and passion of mine. I remember winning $5 in a drawing competition in kindergarten. This was the best thing EVER - so I think it was a pretty big motivator!
Why is it important to you?
Painting is what I do in my downtime. I really enjoy time by myself, so a cuppa, my paintbrush and my own company make a pretty good combo.
How does it make you feel?
I have never been one for long projects. I will always finish one, but it might take me a few years! So drawing for me is a short-term project that I can get done quickly and still receive satisfaction out of it.
What challenges get in the way?
I think that when I see other artists it's easy to want to be like them and to replicate what they have done. If I start to think that their art is better and more creative, I need to realise that the art they create is what they are good at and that I have my own style that I am good at.
What inspires you?
My husband is always inspiring me to pursue my passions and interests. I'm also inspired by my mum and her love for art.
What do you do when you're not creating?
I am a mummy to a sweet 8-month-old girl, but I also work a few days a week in a pharmacy.
What do you do for fun?
Honestly, I paint. But I also love the outdoors. I love spending time with my husband and baby girl. I also enjoy sewing and crocheting.
How do you hope your art will impact others?
I hope that aspiring young artists will see that anyone can paint! One of my favourite quotes is by Vincent Van Gogh - “If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint', then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”
I also do a lot of work with quotes from the Bible that I hope might encourage people from all walks of life.
What else are you passionate about?
I am passionate about helping young people seek out God in their lives. We help with the youth group at our church and it's heaps of fun!
What is your favourite living-room-dance tune?
A few months ago I had this crazy obsession with 'Cheerleader'! I don't mind anything with a good beat.
What is your favourite breakfast food?
I don't think I could live without a good serve of Eggs Benny, but I do enjoy oats most mornings.
