Yes I'm a girl, yes we're all different, but you know what? It's awesome!
Why shouldn't we be embracing our womanhood? We all have unique gifts and we can use them for good in this world! Yes, we are pulled in certain directions because of our gender, but that gives us a sweet platform to prove the world wrong, and be our own rock stars.
Now let me tell you what's expected of me, as I'm sure you too often feel pressure to act, dress and look a certain way.
Mainstream media seems to expect me to be beautiful, slim, fashionable and an avid shopper. They expect me to idolise fashion and beauty magazines, and put celebrities on a pedestal.
My school expects me to behave in a lady-like manner, cross my legs, sit up straight and make sure my skirt isn’t too short.
My family expect me to achieve high academic results, go to university, get a stable job, a house and a husband.
My friends expect me to support them, to believe in them, to agree with their opinions (most of the time).
There are merits and flaws in all these expectations and pressures, some will lift you up, others drag you down. But, it ultimately has to be you who decides what expectations you want to take on board and what you want to reject.
Sometimes expectations shift and flow too. I think it's better if they're loose like yoga pants, rather than tight like a pair of super skinny jeans. You need to be able to breathe, move and grow without expectations suffocating you!
So may I now tell you what I want from me?
I want to be healthy, fit, kind, loving, compassionate, a good leader, a thought provoker, someone who inspires others, a reliable friend.
I want to be ME!
Now it’s over to you. What do YOU want from YOU?
