Because there’s one thing stronger than magic - sisterhood. - Robin Benway
‘Asians’. That’s what they called us. She is Japanese. I am Chinese.
Obviously we are not biologically related, but we are connected.
On her first day in Australia she was not brave enough to talk to the Aussies, or even to me. She stood out with her black wavy hair and tanned skin. I was reminded of my lonely first day in Australia, three years ago, a time when everyone thought I was mute.
I decided to step into her life and ask her out to a Chinese restaurant, just to have an Asian bond. She was surprised, and thrilled! That night marked the beginning of our sisterhood.
Living in a tiny community, with English as our second language, we can be extremely shy and quiet. We both make every effort to improve our English skills. Our brains are constantly translating. We talk and read together, and learn from our mistakes. We have to be tough and stick with each other.
Together we survive, we reach out and broaden our vision. These shared obstacles have strengthened our sisterhood.
As for you, never forget there is always a potential ‘sister’ nearby, fighting for the same thing you are. Find her, and walk with her because two are better than one!
